Ingenium Automation are very proud to have been working closely with RedT Energy in developing a PLC based “master” energy storage control system that provides the overall management of 7x RedT VRFB energy storage systems. In addition the “master” system integrates with site energy meters, wind turbines and the ElPower power converter system (PCS). This leading edge energy storage system is being dispatched to the remote Scottish Isle of Gigha and will be integrated with the island’s wind farm.
This complex master PLC control system communicates to the VRFB energy storage PLC systems via EtherNet/IP protocol, networked in a star arrangement. Additional communication to the wind turbine, energy meters and PCS are via Modbus TCP/IP.
The master PLC facilitates the following:
- Power Transfer (between grid and storage) decision logic.
- VRFB energy storage system “string” management.
- Time-shift schedule facility.
- Alarm and fall-back routines.
- Data logging.
- email / sms alarm notifications.
The project involved developing a detailed functional design specification document around RedT Energy’s requirements. This formed the basis for master PLC software development. Initial system testing was carried out at PNDC (Power Networks Distribution Center), Cumbernauld, Scotland.
